The Looking Glass Garden
Looking Glass Garden is a walk with sculptures along the way in Te Puke which is in Bay of Plenty. The garden is located on Te Puke Quarry Road and it’s main feature is the Stairway to Heaven which is a big climb that grants you stunning views over this beautiful region.
Along the walk are numerous sculptures to look at. A lot of people that visit say it takes you back to your childhood. Along the walk, there are multiple different trails with sculptures along the way. Now understand that some of these trails do require a bit of TLC and maintenance, but for the most part the tracks should be easy to find and follow.
There is plenty of parking at the trailhead and it is well signposted. It’s suggested to bring snacks and food and water along the hike with you as there are no café or food facilities present there. Solid hiking shoes are recommended as well as some trails are a bit overgrown and others have steep climbs and descents which require sturdy footing.
On the trails you can visit the houses that the 3 Pigs Built, and also Grandma’s Cottage from Little Red Riding Hood. There are multiple places along the trails that give gorgeous views over the surrounding countryside.
Entry fee is suggested to be $5 and is by honesty box at the entrance. The main attractions there are definitely Grandma’s House and the Stairway to Heaven. These are must sees and must visits for your trip there.
A Great Escape
Looking Glass Garden is a great escape from the Te Puke, Mount Maunganui, Papamoa, and Tauranga areas. It is not a far drive and a great way to get back to nature and be surrounded by living, breathing trees and native wildlife.
Lots of the trails have nursery rhyme characters present which is fun for the kids to explore. Many people bring their kids and families and make a morning or afternoon of it and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Even if you plan to go when it is raining, still do it. Adds to the character and enchantment of this awesome place.
Please keep in mind that as these are gardens, the weather and elements do take it’s toll on the paths and statues over time. It is still open, still accepting visitors, but some have noted that it does need some TLC. This is a work in progress by the owners. The nursery rhyme area is very cool and build into the hillside there and a good area for kids young and old to explore. Make sure you bring your camera to take pictures of the main features along the trails but also of the awesome views over Te Puke and the Bay of Plenty and the ocean towards Mount Maunganui.
